A few days ago, SanDisk announced its new Cruzer portable storage device, which offers capacities up to 256 MB. This must be the SD card that allows the device to achieve that capacity, and it's not just limited to use in SanDisk's storage gadget. The company says that its 256 MB SD Card is capable of storing up to eight hours of digital music, more than 80 minutes of MPEG-4 video or more than 250 high-resolution digital images (remember that I like to quote these claims in an effort to help you exercise your math skills). For those of you not familiar with these little postage stamp-sized storage cards, the SD Card is a flash memory device that measures 32 mm long, 24mm wide and 2.1mm thick. The 256MB SanDisk SD Card uses a 1-gigabit (1Gbit, or 1,024 Megabit) NAND flash memory chip and is based on multi-level cell (MLC) technology that allows two bits of data to be stored in one memory cell, effectively doubling memory capacity. The 256MB SanDisk SD Card will be available in this quarter and is expected to sell for approximately $199.
