Cell Computing Pushes 700MHz System-On-Module for Embedded Apps
Well, the Embedded Systems Conference is upon us this week, so we're bound to see a bunch of interesting things that will be embedded in other things to make them go. Cell Computing says its 700MHz Plug-N-Run embedded system-on-module is for performance-driven embedded applications (aren't they all?) in test & measurement, medical, military/aerospace, e-kiosk, transportation, and industrial automation industries. Cell's new Plug-N-Run module integrates AT motherboard functionality, including a thermal interface, graphics controller, and a low-power Intel Pentium III processor at 700MHz in a 3.0" x 5" x 0.7" package. Cell's Plug-N-Run modules support up to 512MB SDRAM (up to 256MB ECC SDRAM on selected models), PCI and X-BUS expansion buses, an AGP graphics controller with 4MB VRAM and LCD and CRT interfaces. Peripheral I/O interfaces include dual USB and RS232 COM ports, IDE, FDD, LPT, and PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports. Each module has a Phoenix BIOS and support for Windows 98, 2000, NT, and NTE. The little system can also run Linux, FreeBSD, and real-time operating systems. Cell offers a development board and a starter kit for the Plug-N-Run modules along with documentation and hardware reference design information. The 700MHz Plug-N-Run module will be available in sample quantities in October, with pricing in OEM quantities of US$964. The Plug-N-Run development board is priced at US$499. Memory and accessories are priced separately. It's like a PC you can fit in your pocket if your other pocket is big enough to hold a display.
