DVD+RW Alliance

Ad

The DVD+RW alliance is getting ready for double-layer DVDs. Instead of 4.7 GB, recording will now be done on two layers (DVD9, 9.4 GB) - yet in the beginning, only with 2.4X the recording speed. According to Verbatim, the media could, however, be the biggest impediment for the new generation because the price is not expected to be less than US$ 15 each until the end of this year. Also, the prices for the 8X recordable DVD+R and DVD-Rs are still clearly above that for 4X or even 2X recording speed. So far, Ricoh, Maxell and Verbatim have announced their support. The first drive will presumably be from Sony (May/June).

A positive aspect is the fact that the double-layer support is meant to be seen as a supplement to existing technology. Due to the high prices and the rather long recording time of about 50 minutes per DVD9, it is recommended, in the case of data DVDs, to record on two DVD5s in 8X speed.

Required for the double-layer technology are at least 140 mW strong lasers. Because these are already available in conventional 8X burners, it is even conceivable to upgrade current burners to double-layer capability.

Ahead Software, known for its burning software Nero, is ready for double-layer recording.

It's not only available in pairs: in the photo are the prototypes of Philips' double-layer burners.
