Carnivore secrets revealed

by - source: Tom's Hardware

According to documents obtained using the Freedom of Information Act from the US government, the FBI's e-surveillance program, Carnivore, does more than was initially admitted. The e-mail collection function is, according to an analysis performed by California security firm SecurityFocus, only part of the story.

The program, known inside the FBI as "DragonWare Suite," is capable of watching and recreating everything users do while on the Web. It is also set to enable the FBI to tap Internet telephone calls. Vocal critic of the program, House Majority Leader Richard Armey, rhetorically asked, "DragonWare suite? What were they thinking?"

In related news, the director of the FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center told representatives from international businesses that they should trust law enforcement if they want to solve their Web security problems.
