Carnivore controversy expands
Five top universities the FBI had hoped to tap for a review of the Carnivore e-mail surveillance system have refused, saying the rules of the review allow nothing but a rubber stamp approval. Meanwhile, feds announced that the e-tap program would not be disabled during the review process, as requested by the U.S. Congress, and defended the program in hearings. One of the highlights of those hearings was a slap at "ISP geeks" by one of the Internet's founding programmers who testified on behalf of the FBI.
