John Draper, better known as Captain Crunch, figured out how to use free whistles from Cap'n Crunch cereal boxes to hack the phone system in 1971. Though Draper served several prison sentences for violation against the phone company, Steve Jobs and Stephen Wozniak subsequently sold boxes of his design that allowed users to make free calls anywhere in the world, thus helping fund much of the research behind Apple Computer. His life has been a dramatic and fascinating pilgrimage and he has surprised many by reappearing in Silicon Valley as part of a security startup. Not surprisingly, Draper says, "I'm being treated like a fox trying to guard the hen house."
