Scientists come up with yet another Supermouse
The range of “super” mice continues. We had the super-fast super mouse, the super-brave super mouse and now, we finally have one that might serve a purpose.
The latest addition to the Supermouse family a mouse which is impervious to several kinds of cancer.
Scientists added the Par-4 gene to mouse eggs and it was active in both the offspring, and later the offspring’s sprogs.
Par-4 is a protein, which attacks cancerous tissue but leaves healthy tissue well alone. Scientists found that when they introduced Par-4 into the rodent’s systems, they didn’t develop tumours and lived longer than their less super counterparts.
Scientists hope that this research could help find a better, less harmful treatment for cancer. The mice were immune to prostate and liver cancer with research suggesting this could stretch to accommodate head, neck and breast cancer in the near future.
