Bug infests browser beta testers

Microsoft has confirmed a bug in its Internet Explorer 5.5 beta 1 that has prevented some testers from uninstalling the program after downloading it from the developer's website.

Compounding the problem is the fact that Microsoft's recently revamped Windows Update site denies access to IE 5.5 testers, telling them that it does not support betas.

One Web developer notes the timing of the update block has led many users to suspect an attempt by Microsoft to force users to migrate to Windows 2000.

Microsoft said both problems should be fixed in the next beta.
