Broadcom and IDT Team up with Reference Design for LAN Switch Market
Broadcom and IDT just told us about a production-ready local area network (LAN) switch reference design for managed Ethernet switches. Jointly developed by the two companies, the reference design is a system-level solution supporting Layer 3 systems using the Broadcom StrataSwitch II family of products. The BCM95605S LAN switch reference design lets network managers monitor, control, and bill for different types of traffic with application-appropriate priorities and bandwidth allocation. The gadget is supposed to make systems smarter by allocating network resources where they're needed for stuff like streaming video and voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP), that require high bandwidth, reliable data transmission, low latency and quality of service (QoS) features (aahh, the last buzzword of the dot.com empire). The reference design uses the on-chip peripheral component interface (PCI) of the IDT RC32332 integrated processor with a connection to Broadcom's StrataSwitch II Ethernet switch fabric. It also includes software from Wind River Systems. You can take the BCM95605S LAN switch reference design out the door today in a 19" rack configuration if you've got an extra $5,000 in your pocket. Additional information about the RC32332 and other IDT products can be found on IDT's web site .
