French come up with new initiative to combat piracy
The French have come up with a new way to the increasing amount of people illegally downloading files. Cut them off at source.
French net firms are to begin monitoring what their customers are at and report persistent pirates to a new independent body formed by France’s film, music and net firms.
After the offenders’ information has been passed on it’s slaps on the wrist all around. After that, anyone silly enough to keep up the piracy may be cut off by their internet provider.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has said this is one of the most important moves they’ve seen in the war against piracy.
Head of the committee, Denis Olivennes said that the agreement was more appropriate than previous penalties like jail time or hefty fines.
We’re not so sure. Yeah, disconnecting them is effective but aren’t hefty fines and time in the slammer more likely to make a lasting impression ?
