The British government has announced plans to install CCTV cameras in 20,000 UK homes.

The UK government this week announced that it will spend £400 million ($668 million) on the installation and monitoring of CCTV cameras citizens in their own homes. Aimed at problem or antisocial families, the cameras are there to make sure children go to bed on time, eat well balanced meals and do their homework.

Already in operation in roughly 2,000 homes, the Daily Express reports that these Family Intervention Projects cost between £5,000 and £20,000 per family and include private security guards who conduct home checks on the families.

The news comes just a couple of weeks after Amazon.com's decision to delete copies of 1984 and Animal Farm from customers' Kindles in what the media described as an Orwellian move. You guys reacted pretty strongly to that story, so what are your thoughts on this? Do you think it’s the government's place to police parenting and ensure children don't go astray or do you think this is the government sticking its nose in where it doesn't belong? Let us know!

I think its stupid. It may work well though as a threat to the worst of the ASBO families, something needs to sort them out so if this works then fairplay to the government.

no no no no AND NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is not good. it's feels like having cops nad all other government agencies in your home, and if your kid is at school, you simply cant go and make love to your wife, because someone is watching... and tomorrow you will receive government complain that you are not satisfactory for your wife so she can't be a good mother and you will have to be replaced... :P or you are to "brutal" :PPPP

The danger of this sort of thing is that it sets a precedent, that could slowly grow into other areas of society. First ASBO families, then the family home of all criminals, then the homes of their relatives, then the homes of people just suspected of crimes, then the homes of any one in 'problem areas' and so on. Eventually the day comes when they announce that they will install the cameras in everyone's home 'for their own safety and peace of mind'...

Seems like a good idea to me.
There're SOO many terrible parents and aren't 'bringing up' their kids. Those kids then turn into the next generations criminals and reprobates.

The tricky bit comes with, what's good/bad parenting?
I believe smacking certainly has it's place in parenting, yet it's illegal.

I would like to point out to non-UK readers that the Daily Express is not a credible source. I wouldn't wipe my @r$e with it. Reactionary racist drivel and "scoops" about celebrities are all you'll find within its pages.

This said, I wouldn't put it past Nu-Lab. It has all their hallmarks: A huge waste of public money, authoritarian intrusion into the private lives of citizens, utter failure to see why anyone would think this would be sinister. Oh yes, I could believe any one of our cabinet could have dreamed up this sort of idea. What is Jacqui Smith up to these days anyhow?

Roll on the election!

This story isn't true, although Labour aren't for off meddling to this extent anyway. Thankfully, they have a year left in government tops, before they get booted out for a few decades after the next general election.
