Despite a cringe-inspiring failed demo at CeBit this March, Bluetooth must be on its way into the mainstream. Philips Semiconductors just announced that it has sold more than one million Bluetooth baseband device units. The company was the first chip manufacturer to introduce commercially available Bluetooth solutions to the wireless market in 1999 and a complete system solution in 2000. Even though we haven't really seen a plethora of Bluetooth-enabled devices, those units must be going somewhere, so we'll probably see gads of wireless-enabled widgets sometime in the near future. Philips also just let us know that its speech recognition technology can now understand over one million words. The technology, called SpeechFinder, is mainly used for directory assistance systems and supports more than 25 languages.
