EA Ditches SecuROM From Bad Company 2 Steam

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Say goodbye to SecuROM, Steam gamers!

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 gamers who bought their game through Steam will soon have to contend with one fewer DRM schemes when trying to play their game.

EA revealed in the changelog for the latest Battlefield: Bad Company 2 patch that the update will strip the SecuROM DRM protection from the Steam version of the game.

That doesn't mean that the game will be free from any DRM, but rather EA is content on using Valve's Steam-based DRM to protect its product.

ive got it, playing it, loving it! well, when i say playing it, i mean im running around getting shot to bits before i can fire a round off! lol Seriously though, its a good game, with the feel of a propper battlefield, and if your machine can run it as it should, its got looks to die for. And with my lame ass getting shot time and time again, i proof of that!

Steam FTW :D

As it should be - Valves DRM is great, offering benefits for customers and suppliers. Credit to EA for finally noticing!

It depends, "DRM" is a stupid term that's being applied to different things. Copy protection being labelled as DRM to make it sound more palatable obviously sucks; the way Steam works - if you wan't to call it DRM - is beneficial. Steam without any sort of "DRM" might as well just be utorrent.

I don't approve of everything Valve does with Steam (e.g. retaining the right in their ToS to deactivate or flag people's accounts with no due process) but the principle behind the system (retaining a database of a user account's purchases that allows the account holder to download and play them from any computer) doesn't pose any significant concerns to me, or really deserving of the label "DRM" since it's become irrevocably thought of as an innuendo for copyright protection.

Your proposed examples there are ludicrous though.
