Balloons may replace some satellites
A new high-altitude balloon combines extremely thin Zylon fabric, used in high-end bullet-proof vests, and a pumpkin-shaped design that increases the curvature of the balloon's skin and therefore its ability to withstand extremely high pressure. A test flight of the Ultra-Long Duration Balloon will soon determine whether or not the devices, designed to float 40 kilometres above the Earth for 100 days, will begin to replace far more costly research satellites.
