Automated fabs in three years
The Electronics Times cites Bob Kane, president of Asyst Technologies Inc., who says the semiconductor foundry industry will demand staffless fabs within the next three to five years. The reason for the "lights-out" fabs is that that each "boat" of 25 plate-sized 30 mm wafers is worth around $1 million. With the cost of human error ruining a run so high, the development and deployment of completely automated plants is economically feasible and attractive.
