ATMs linked to IP networks vulnerable to hackers
In a "You probably were expecting this..." moment of divine insight and clarity, analysts tell us that ATMs linked to an IP network are vulnerable to being hacked. A continuing trend by banks to take ATM machines off proprietary networks and put them on the banks’ own TCP/IP networks is introducing new vulnerabilities in the ATM transaction environment, goes the logic.
Most ATM transaction data is not encrypted and can be more easily compromised when it is traversing an IP network compared to dedicated lines, according to a whitepaper from Redspin, a security auditing company in California.
