ATi Radeon 9600 Shipping in First DX9 Notebook
ATi just wrote in to inform us that their Radeon 9600 Mobility graphics chipset will be shipping in the first DirectX 9 capable notebook. You can take a look at our recent preview of the chipset here for further information regarding its architecture and some performance figures. The notebook in question is Gericom's Overdose RADEON 2040 XL, powered by a 2GHz Pentium 4-M, 512MB RAM, a 60GB hard drive, a DVD-R/RW drive, and a 15" SXGA+ panel display.
In the past, the only factor preventing many users from adopting a notebook as their primary PC is that gaming at a reasonable FPS with decent image quality has never really been a viable option. However, in recent months we have seen both Nvidia and ATi announcing new mobile graphics chipsets, meaning that it shouldn't be long before LAN party halls are packed with notebook users, and the back breaking job of lugging your PC and monitor all the way to the venue becomes a thing of the past.
