ATI announces GDDR3
ATI, with some DRAM partners, announced the specification for what the company calls the third generation of double data rate (DDR) DRAM for graphics, known as GDDR3. While today's DDR DRAM allows for speeds of up to 400MHz, GDDR3 was designed to initially provide memory clocks of 500MHz, with headroom for up to 800MHz. GDDR3 is targeted for introduction in 2003. The partners include Elpida, Infineon, and Micron. I'm sure we'll here more of this as time goes by, but it's kind of logical that memory interfaces on graphics cards have to catch up with GPUs and VPUs, too so, ATI is probably making a strategic position for the future with this announcement.
