Athlon-based supercomputer debuts
The University of Delaware will build the first clustered supercomputer based on Advanced Micro Devices' Athlon chips. "Samson" will rank, according to the University of Delaware's Bartol Research Institute, among the fastest 200 supercomputers extant. In its first iteration, it will use 132 1GHz Athlon CPUs. Later, when the interconnect scheme is upgraded from a two-dimensional to a three-dimensional torus, the number of microprocessors will decrease to 128, which is closer to a perfect cube.
