Asus Has Secret Console "Better Than Wii"

By - Source: Tom's Hardware US | B 6 comments

The Eee Wii? Weee?

Not only is Asus trying to beat Apple in the innovative design department, it seems to be thinking of going after Nintendo in the video game console segment too.

According to comments made by Jonathan Tsang, the vice chairman of Asus, in an interview with the New York Times, the Taiwanese computer maker has ‘polished off’ a video game system it claims can rival the Wii.

“We have a product we think is better than the Wii,” Tsang said. “But the content is complicated.”

Asus claims to have developed a system that has controllers that reflect motion better than the Wii controllers (although the playing field may have changed with Wii MotionPlus or even Sony’s PlayStation Motion Controller).

Asus’s problem isn’t with the hardware, given its systems design and production know-how, but rather getting the software support. A console is only as good as the games it plays, and right now Asus doesn’t have the games.

“Sometimes it is a chicken-and-egg problem,” Tsang added. “We don’t have the chicken, so cannot have the egg.”

Tsang also revealed that Asus has an e-book reader ready as well, but faces the same problem of not having content providers.

this is the point in which asus will fail. they have no experience making consoles... apart from that, the wii is already one of the most common peripherals in the world... it might be better, but it will never replace the wii.

Everyone said that about Sony when they brought out the PS1...

They are going to have to get a killer must have game to get people to but it, it will have to be seriously cheap too. I'm sure with their PC background they can get some for of added value into the machine though like HD playback and decent internet browsing...

3D0 was a market beater. AmigaCD 32bit was a winner. Atari Jaguar was a top bit of kit. Sega got out of the console market. I wonder what these guys thing they'll bring to the mix!

Philips CD-i - erm! maybe they'll top that.

Great line up of games - Great controller. Maybe a funky king of the homebrew bit of kit to bring back the 80s would make it the winner.

I'd love to see another console on the market. Though, this may just end up being vapourware like certain past "consoles".

Well making a bit of kit better then the Wii isnt a challenge really.

Its just can you get enough folks that know nothing about consoles to buy your machine purely because "ohhhh that looks fun to play if Bob and Janet come round for fondue!" Then just sits beside the TV collecting dust like every Wii I've seen in the wild.

I reckon the average worldwide usage on a Wii is 4 hours.

a new gaming console just might stir things up again, before sony/neo get lazy and milk the cash cow dry
