NPD: Apple Owners Have More Money and Stuff

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Mac owners are ballers.

Yes, most of us are hardcore computer users here with multiple machines – at least a desktop and a laptop. But surprise – the mainstream Apple computer owner is more hardcore than the average Windows PC owner.

According to research from the NPD Group, Apple computer ownership has risen from 9 percent in 2008 to 12 percent this year. Nearly 85 percent of Apple owners also own a Windows-based PC.

What's more, 66 percent of Apple-owning households have three or more computers, while only 29 percent of Windows PC households can claim the same. Not surprisingly, with the popularity of the MacBook, 72 percent of Apple owners have a notebook, while only 50 percent of Windows owners have a portable.

Taking it a step further, Apple owners also have more electronic gadgets. Ownership of iPod, DSLR, camcorder, LCD TV and navigation devices are far more prevalent in Apple-owning households than those with just Windows machines.

Of course, one strong explanation of this is that Apple computers cost more, and thus are more likely attached to those with more disposable income for electronic luxuries.

“While Apple owners tend to own more computers and more electronics devices, there is also a high correlation among Apple owners and more affluent consumer households,” said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. “Thirty-six percent of Apple computer owners reported household incomes greater than $100,000, compared to 21 percent of all consumers.

“With a higher household income, though, it’s not a surprise that those consumers are making more electronics purchases,” Baker said.  “The average Apple household owns 48 CE devices whereas the average computer household owns about 24. Apple household owners’ actions and purchases can be used by the industry as leading indicators for hot new products and adoption.”

And evidently fewer brains - although I maintain the unibody MacBook Pros look sensational (matte screen though) there's just no reason for the massive premium you pay for it.

thats a dumb conclusion... most people that buy a pc arent tech savy's that know everything about computers, most dont have money to buy all that other stuff on the graph, plus i bet that most mac users are rather young individuals with a somewhat degree of education, probably already working in a nice job that can buy them what they need... they may still live with theire parents, or at least they haven't started a family... (not saying its bad, its just a stereotype lol) i may be a pc user, but its just because macs are expensive as everyone knows... cant get as much gamming on it, and i just cant get used to the one button mouse thingy lol...

Science Confirms The Obvious!

People with more money buy more expensive stuff!

Apple prouduts are for people who are fed with a silver spoon from birth. They learn just enough to get them selves a good job, assisted by their parents. They pay premiums on everything because they are just so stupid when it comes to critical thinking. Mac users.

So what we are saying is that people who don't have more money that sense can't afford Apples? Is that news?
In other breaking news the Pope has been found to be Catholic, and contrary to popular belief Elvis is in fact dead. (Not Costello though, he is still rocking!)

Seriously though, how is this a story worthy of print? This is blatently news generated by marketing execs to get Apples name in print in a broadly positive light.

Rab1d-BDGR :
"Nearly 85 percent of Apple owners also own a Windows-based PC."...Because 85% of Apple owners get back from the shop with their overpriced piece of crap and then realise that they still need a windows PC do all the things that macs won't.

You took the words right out of my mouth. It's like I said before any number of times in previous posts - you NEED windows. It does everything, even if it doesn't do it very well. Windows is not my primary OS but I still need it even if I'd rather not have it.

Apple does what it does extremely well. It just doesn't do enough. And for that price I want it to give me a fucking reach-around while I make my morning coffee.

I don't like Apple because they market themselves as trendy and high-dollar. Sure, there are other PC manufacturers that cater to the folks willing to spend a bunch of money on a computer ($2000+) but none of them seem to be arrogant. They don't advertise their machine as a pathway to some elitist group but as a beast of a machine (custom gaming PC company for example). What Apple does is market their computers as fashion accessories and as a way to say "I am better than you."

They only sell PCs (sorry but Macs are PCs, a Mac is the same thing as saying a Dell) that are shiny white (or brushed aluminum) and many of their commercials are basically juvenile and ridicule PC users. Maybe if they had some less offensive advertising, quit naming EVERY single product of theirs some "hip" name (Time Machine, Time Capsule, Mighty Mouse, iPod, iPhone, and so on) and made some laptop models that the average computer user (that actually cares how much money they spend) might be able to afford I wouldn't dislike them as much. Not only do those things annoy me but they try and distance themselves from the rest of the techonology world. Instead of going to CES like a likable company they have to be arrogant and have their own MacWorld. Instead of having normal news magazines they have their own special Mac magazines and websites. Quit being so esoteric and arrogant Apple.

Well, a great deal of hardware and software innovation does come from Apple though, in contrast to Microsoft.

Personally I find Microsoft's strategy at least as distasteful.
