Apple announces Safari 3 browser for Windows

San Francisco (CA) - Apple today introduced the third generation of its Safari browser for Windows and Mac computers at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC).

Joining the browser battle on the Windows PC, Apple today released a beta version of Safari 3, which the company claims is the fastest browser available. According to the company, Safari can render web pages twice as fast as IE7 and up to 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2.

"We think Windows users are going to be really impressed when they see how fast and intuitive web browsing can be with Safari," said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in a prepared statement. "Hundreds of millions of Windows users already use iTunes, and we look forward to turning them on to Safari’s superior browsing experience too."

Safari 3 sports a interface that is vastly different than what most Windows users are used to from Internet Explorer and Firefox. Apple is using elements from its iTunes software to create a familiar look and feel and, compared to the previous Safari browser, offers a slightly updated feature set with tabbed browsing, revised bookmark management and a built-in RSS reader.

The final version of Safari 3 is promised to be available with the debut of the upcoming Mac OS X version 10.5 Leopard. Apple said it will offer the software as a free download to Mac OS X Tiger and Windows users in October of this year.

The beta version of the software is available as a free 28.1 MB download from Apple’s website.
