Choosing a home for your P4 will take a bit of research with the number of boards out there holding up vacancy signs. Fortunately, Dr. Tom and friends already ran the various chipsets you'll encounter through their paces last month . If you decide to go for a board with an i845D chipset, one of the options that were brought to our attention today is Aopen's AX4B Pro motherboard. The AX4B Pro has all the features of the Intel NetBurst micro-architecture coupled with the new 82845D Memory Controller Hub (Brookdale) and the 82801BA I/O Controller Hub (ICH2). The ATX form factor board has five PCI slots, one AGP 4X slot, and one CNR slot. It supports up to 2 GB of DDR SDRAM using 184 pin DDR DIMMs in 64/128/256/512 MByte memory modules. Onboard sound is provided by Analog Devices' AD1885 AC'97 CODEC. The AX4B Pro also includes two serial ports, one parallel port, two UltraDMA100 IDE channels that support up to four ATA100 IDE devices, one floppy connector, four USB ports, and a game/MIDI port. The board's "Dr. Voice" feature is intended to let you solve installation problems. Aopen says it can detect component and installation issues related to the CPU, memory modules, VGA, PCI add-in cards, FDD, HDD, and allow your computer to literally talk you through it. Dr. Voice lets you choose between English, German, Japanese, and Chinese. A 1MHz stepping frequency adjustment function in the BIOS lets you to adjust the CPU FSB frequency from 100-248 in 1MHz increments.
