Thunderbolt 3 data connection

Nearly all the Thunderbolt implementations I’ve seen are for display purposes. Using an add-in Thunderbolt card for a PC typically shows the internal TB header connection and external video DP or mini-DP connection in order to supply the video signal out the TB port.
I just want to use the TB port to talk to an audio interface, like a Focusrite Clarett 2Pre TB device. For an audio device like this, would I still need the external video connection, or would the internal TB header connection be sufficient?
