Problem with connecting to some games

Hello, I got a problem that really messes me up. When I want to play for example CoD MW2/3 I can't connect to the service provided by those games (basically servers), I can't connect to dedicated servers in CS (both GO and 1.6). Strangely what I can do is play some Battlefield games (3/4), some default matchmaking in CSGO, and I believe the servers for PC CoD4/5 are working too.

The problem is connection, no doubt about that. I live now in a dorm. But when I am home I can play anything I want with no problem, but when in dorm I can't. I use TP-Link TL-WDR3600 sharing connection with 3 mates. So my question is what can I do to fix this issue. Note that one of my mates also playing CoD on PC (I use laptop) can play any of them with no problem.

Thanks in advance

  1. You can't do anything, the connection is controlled by the school. You can use your phone as a hotspot but that is pretty laggy for gaming.

  2. There has to be something imo, otherwise my friend next to me wouldn't connect either. Am I thinking wrong?

No, you're correct. If your friend is on the same network and is having no problems at all, it's something to do with how your computer is trying to connect. Unfortunately I don't really know enough about networking (yet) to really tell you where to look, but maybe if you contact the school's IT department they might be able to help you.

If others can connect to the same thing it's not a school block, although that does not mean it's not an issue on their end. See if you can find out the IP or server name to the server you are trying to connect (help for the game may have those listed to troubleshoot connections) and do a trace route (tracert command) to that IP to see where it starts to time out. If you use some sort of firewall on the computer, shut that off while you are testing things.
