Overclocking gave me a worse firestrike score.

So recently I water cooled and so naturally I overclocked my CPU and GPU. I got my cpu from 3.4 to 4.5 @ 1.45V and my gpu from 1.0 to 1.5. A few months ago before my overclock I got a 15000 which was on the lower end for my hardware. Then after overclocking I dropped to a measly 12000. I took my GPU overclock off and it dropped to 9000 so I put that back on. Then I took my CPU down to 4.3 @ 1.25 V and got a 11000 score. I completely took it off and the demo ran terribly but I got a 12000? What is going on? Everyone says thermal throttling but my temps don't get too far past 60C. I'm very confused.

System Specs:
i7 6800
980 Ti
750W G2
500GB
850 EVO
32 GB 2400 MHz Ram

For cooling i have a 6 fan 2 Rad custom loop.

Wtf is going on, did Firestrike change???

More about overclocking gave worse firestrike score
  1. u lost the silicon lottery XD
try to dial to normal clock speed and see the score :) if it's better, then yes, u really unlucky to lose the silicon lottery, if not, that means there are something wrong with your rig

  2. I reset to original settings and ran again and got an even worse score. 9000. The avg score is around 16-17000. What is going on?

Can you show us some links to your scores, in a comparison maybe? Might shed some light on what's going on.

had any info on the hardware usage? like CPU and GPU usage? maybe the temps are fine but somehow they aren't using their full power there

update the driver to the latest possible
also check if there's any virus/malware that's hogging your performance too

before the problem occur, do you have any more change, other than the watercooler?

I checked usage a while ago. GPU clocks stay steady - usage at 100%. CPU clocks drop a bit and usage is at around 30-60%. Drivers are up to date. No other system changes except I spray painted my RAM heatspreader (while removed from ram chip) and I installed cable extensions.

It's weird because I saw a 30% increase in my cinebench scores. PUBG seems to play about the same, maybe a little worse.

You can see my core clocks.^

EDIT: Shit i just noticed my graphics score tank and my physics score shoot up. I think it might be my cable extensions Ill let you guys know!

  7. On the top one, 9553....the GPU is running 1200 core? The physics score looks ok for the CPU clock. The GPU score is horrible. Something went wrong on that run.

Middle score, 14298: That GPU score is more in line with what I'd expect from a 980ti at near stock clocks. Your CPU clock seems to be a bit unstable, or it would have scored higher here on the physics portion of the test.

Third score, 12103: GPU score is horrible. Physics score is what I'd expect to see at that CPU clock. Now, your GPU clock seems to be unstable at 1527.

First thing I'd do, is run DDU and uninstall all of your GPU drivers. Then, do a clean install. Trial and error....that's what benchmarking is about. Finding out what works best for you, and running with it.

You're obviously very new to overclocking, so I'd suggest finding a tutorial and watching it.

I'm not really sure this has anything to do with overclocking.
The 14000 score was from this summer. I had an air cooler and ran everything stock. Now when I try to run the benchmark stock I get 9000. The 9000 is with a stock default bios, stock default fan curves, stock default afterburner settings.
I have to overclock my CPU and GPU HEAVY to even get close to touching that 14000 again. I tried drivers and it did nothing. I will try to do a clean install of drivers, I have a feeling that might be it. After that I'm going to format my harddrive and try everything again.

I feel like its software, if my GPU was a brick it would (most likely) either work, or not work. It would be strange if it got damaged and so now my performance is cut in half.

  9. from what i can see you got the biggest score with ram at 2133, is it true or it is a bad detection?

The Maswell architecture was sensitive to heat, but....not that bad. I almost have to think it's drivers.

RAM speed makes very little difference on Firestrike....certainly not enough to account for the vastly different scores.

I agree with you in normal situation, but a bad overclock to ram can alter results very much, or maybe an unstable memory controller.

  12. I've never seen memory clock affect firestrike scores...timespy, yes. Not firestrike.
