Adaptec Raid Controller 31605 All 12 drives failed

Hi,

I am building a sort of Gaming/media center hybrid using a used Raid controller and 12 disks i got from a server and now i am stuck. All 12 disks used to be in a larger array in a server. I had to use an older version of Adaptec storage manager to get it to work but now Adaptec say`s all 12 disks failed. My first thought was since they were a part of an larger array that they still had the old raid configuration and i can just format them. I have now formatted the first two but they still show all 12 failed. What can then be the cause of this? Warning, i am fairly new to building a raid and still learning. Also first time i am asking help online.

  1. Formatting the drives only writes data at the beginning of the drives. However, many RAID controllers store metadata at the end of the drives.

If you completely zero fill the drives that should take care of it. Or, using a hex editor of some sort, just zero out the first and last few hundred sectors.

Most of the high-end RAID card has a function to reset a failed drive, once you enable that, the HDD comes back
