PCIe 16x lane splitting

I have a passive 16x PCIe card with 4 m.2 nvme slots [m-key]. I have heard there are motherboards that allow you to split a 16x slot to support each m.2 slot on this card as a separate device. I haven't yet found any specific boards though, I suspect it would be a workstation or server board. Would anyone here have any ideas?

  1. With some more digging it seems that a few Supermicro motherboards allow a 16x slot to be carved up into 4/4/4/4, particularly boards that support this card; http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SLG3-2M2.cfm.
