Audio problems with the Gigabyte Z270-HD3 mobo

I am having issues with the rear 3.5mm speaker port on the Gigabyte Z270-HD3, my headset will stop playing sound for 2-3 seconds then continue as normal - this happens roughly once an hour.

All the hardware is brand new.
The headset uses both usb and the 3.5mm jack.
When this happens Realtek HD Audio Manager notifies me that a speaker was unplugged.
The problem does not occur when the headset is plugged into the front panel.
The speaker is set as default device and the "Headset Earphone" is set as default communications device under playback devices.
Windows recognizes the device and says that drivers are up to date (it says under details that it don't need drivers)

Before you ask I have checked that it is plugged in securely, and yes I have tried restarting my computer.

Any help would be appreciated.
