Msi Rx 480 4gb gaming x or Palit gtx 1060 3gb

So, I am planning to upgrade my graphics card. The RX 480 4gb is priced at $273 and Palit gtx 1060 3gb at $195, from where I live.

I want to know if it's worth it to get the RX 480 4gb over the palit gtx 1060 3gb. I'll be gaming @1080p and mining at times. Is it worth getting the Msi RX 480 4gb?

Is the performance worth the price? I am also runnning an i3-6100 system atm

  1. The Rx will be better. If you were talking about a 1060 6gb, then it would be different. The 1060 6gb and the RX480/580 trade blows depending on the game.

  2. In terms of gaming performance, no an RX 480 4GB is not worth $80 more than a 1060 3GB. However, if you're interested in mining Eth then the 1060 3GB will become unusable in that regard sooner than the 480 due to the Eth DAG hitting > 3GB in the near-ish future.

3 GB VRAM is enough for 1080p

If you can get a 6GB 1060 cool, if not, the 3GB still beats the RX in every possible way and the VRAM difference won't do that much harm. Depending on what games you'll play.

  4. I have, am selling that is, a Radeon 7950. About the same performance of say a 1050ti. It still did ok, but that said, I just got an RX 480 8gb. No way I would want to go less than 4gb. I would suggest going more if you can.

If you are really considering spending more for the 4gb 480, I think I'd consider landing here somewhere.

That should be better than either one, I imagine in a year or so you may appreciate the extra buffer memory.

So in terms of performance, I guess they will be close enough to each other? The palit gtx 1060 priced @ $195 is a one-time offer. Also, I am considering future upgrades tbh. I am just wondering if it will be worth it to get that RX 480 which is why I am kind of torn between these 2 gpus

Thing is, I prefer dual fans since I will be doing some overclock. I want to keep the card as cool as possible.

Guess I really have no choice but to gamble on the 1060 3gb. I hope the Palit cards are okay though.

  8. jesus christ people, apples and oranges!!! memory per se means nothing r7 370 2gb vs 4gb is like 0.0005 percent difference, both in price and performance! 1060 3g and 1060 6g are 2 different cards, especially pricewise 6gb is full 100 euros / dollars more expensive than 3g, thats 50% in this case, i'll repeat it's 50% more money for the 6g version, thats half of the new card one can buy in 2 or 3 years, and for gaming 3gb is more than enough cause 6gb needs more power, needs better cpu (everything bellow ryzen 1600 bottlenecks 1060 6g and so on and so forth... today hardly any game uses more than 3gb ram and it will stay that way until we buy new gpu's in 2 years or so... (i am buying 1060 3gb Gigabyte tomorrow, because of everything mentioned, and because it's the only card that is not heavily overpriced in that range
