Dual Channel not working with single RAM?

Hey there!

I sold an ASRock ATX Dual Channel DDR4 M.2 Socket Motherboard (H270 Pro4) and the buyer told me since is "Dual Channel" it doesn't work with a single RAM stick. Is that correct?

/edit: I expressed myself wrong. He's saying that the motherboard did not boot with a single RAM because, since it's "dual channel", it NEEDS two sticks to boot up. I'm 99% sure that it should boot and work fine with a single RAM, it will work in single channel but it will definitely boot.

  1. Yes. You need two ram sticks(Dual) to enable the dual channel. It wont work with single ram stick.

    Rules to enable dual-channel mode
To achieve dual-channel mode, the following conditions must be met:
Same memory size. Examples: 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB.
Matched DIMM configuration in each channel.
    Matched in symmetrical memory slots.

Configurations that do not match the above conditions revert to single-channel mode.

    Peace.

  2. Not working as in doesn't boot? Or, not "working" as in not getting dual channel operation with a single dimm? If his issue is the 2nd, then he/she needs to understand you need identical dimms properly inserted in the correct slots.

That's not true. You will be able to boot your PC with single ram stick on a motherboard that supports dual channel. The only thing is it wont be enabling the dual channel mode.

    Peace.

He just told me it didn't boot so he traded with a friend for 2 sticks different brand but same capacity. Weird. Maybe he needed to activate single channel in the BIOS? Idk..

    Peace 2u2

  6. Bios will automatically detect the settings and enable it. Reboot and access the bios and set all memory to default options (or the entire bios to default).

    Peace.
