How much RAM do I need? 16GB or 8GB?

Hi everyone,

I am currently building a mid range gaming PC for a friend of mine and I am unsure how much RAM he would need. My PC has 16GB of RAM and I'm loving it, but there are times where i think "did I need 16 GB of RAM?"

He is wanting to play FPS games like; Overwatch
Open world games like: Skyrim or Fallout

How much RAM would I need?
16GB or 8GB?
Thank you,

Depends on how much stuff you/he wants to run in the background while you/he games. For pure gaming only, 8GB is more than Win plus most 32 bit coded games together will use. If you like to keep other apps open while gaming, 16GB is not overkill... and probably needed.

  2. Some games already recommend 16Gb and a lot of upcoming AAA titles do. I'd get 16Gb matched kit now, getting 8Gb now and adding 8Gb later isn't guaranteed to work without issues.

  3. I recommend 16GB

8GB is enough for desktop usage but open world games can utilize a lot. In GTA V my RAM usage gets up to about 8GB after 30min or so of play.

EDIT: With 8GB of RAM on-board the usage maxes out at 4.5 - 5GB

Yeah true, I'm pretty sure he tends to leave other windows open whilst playing games. But I think he'll most likely have these open: example: Discord and Overwatch. Since that's what he'll most likely be doing. A game and communication software
