Manually Setting CPU voltage on an R5 1600 limits the cpu frequency to 1.5ghz?

Hey there,
I am attempting to overclock my cpu. Ryzen R5 1600.
With the clock speed set to 3.8ghz and the voltage to auto its overclocks fine, even stress tests well. HWmoniter and CPUZ show the overclock.
However when I went to render a video my pc crashed. No big deal I thought, so I manually put in a core voltage of 1.35. But when I change this setting both cpuz and HWmonitor show a core frequency of only 1.5mghz. Using cenebench to benchmark shoes a HUGE difference in scores between the first overclock and after I manually changed the voltage. What Have I missed?
I'm using an MSI X370 SLI plus with the most recent bios update, windows 10 64bit, gtx 1070, and a hyper evo 212 cooler.

  1. I believe Paul's hardware over on yt has made a good video on how to overclock the new ryzen chips and memory. Try watching that to see if you did anything incorrectly or missed something out.

Thanks for the tip. I actually used that very video to overclock my pc the first time. I thought I was good to go after my stress testing but then I tried to render a video. The odd thing here is that my attempts to manually set the cpu core voltage down clocks the CPU, even when it shows up as 3.8ghz in the bios.
