Overclocking Intel Core i7 7700k 4.2ghz

How Should I go about overclocking my i7? Should I start by going to 5ghz and performing stress tests or go in smaller increments? Also for temperature, is 81°c under max load with the default 4.2ghz a normal temperature to have?

My h80i is on the back of my carbide 540. Is this optimal or should it be on the top of my case.(image included)

My motherboard is the Asus Z170 Pro Gaming.

  1. Have you researched OCing at all?

A little bit. I know how to overclock. I have just never overclocked a CPU. I've only overclocked a GPU using EVGA Precision.

  3. You're CPU is already getting 81c at max load on stock? That's pretty high but personally I would try 4.8ghz first and start your manual voltage at 1.235 and either work your way up or down from that and check your temps

But you might wanna invest in a bigger water cooler

Research OCing a CPU, learn the temps, learn what to watch for, the stickies were written for a reason as they capture a lot of knowledge in one place and have been added to. Anything you get told in a thread WILL leave out something critical, that something could be the thing that you needed to watch for to prevent failure.
