How do I overclock?

Hello, I have an Athlon II X4 635 @ 2.9GHz
I'm trying to OC it to 3.4ghz,
Is it posible with a stock cooler? If yes, how would I do this? I have the m4a785-m motherboard.

Nope, you need an after-market cooler. AMD runs much hotter after overclocking, it needs something solid to keep the CPU temperatures in check.

  2. Have you read any of the stickies on OCing anything? And as to stock cooler, nope, never use stock when OCing.

  3. Besides what's already been mentioned, I'm not sure why you'd bother overclocking anyway. You won't notice any difference in today's games and programs on such an old chipset. This is exactly why I returned my 8-year old Core 2 Duo E8400 former gaming rig back to stock 3.0GHz from an overclocked 4.2GHz state used for a few years. Makes no difference for today's applications since newer tech is so far advanced. It's also a waste of electricity and just a way to early kill an otherwise decent general use chip (Youtube, Office, email).
