PC crashes when playing games like GTA

My GPU crashes to a black screen when i play a game like GTA V and my sound is horrible noises and im forced to turn my pc on and off.

The only way to stop this is to underclock it , I have a SAPHIRE HD 7850 OC Edition 2GB

it runs at about 40 degrees celcius when gaming.

I dont know why this is hapenning, I had the same issue with a previous computers GPU but it was due to it overheating. This one runs cool

specs:
i5 2400
600W btonze 80+ PSU
8GB DDR3 RAM
HD 7850 OC EDITION

  1. GTA5 is a CPU intensive game, What are your CPU temps in game?

  2. ai am getting about 60 degrees on the CPU
    GPU is around 40

like i said, underclocking fixes the issue, but i dont like it because it reduces framerates.

  3. Install MSI Afterburner, go thru settings, enable the OSD on each temp and other stats. Start GTA V as normal. Your system is WAAAAAAYYYY old and outdated if your trying to do "ULTRA" or "HIGH" and probably WHY it crashes. You will see in MSI as a overlay as you play and you can see what parts temps are and how much your using them up.

MY suggestion is stick down to Low-Med graphics and see how it does then. IF your doing any OCing make sure to disable that too and see how it does then.

  4. I just checked with MSI afterburner

All my temps were fine and i had 98% usage on the GPU in most games

problem is this happens on other games like borderlands, not just GTA

it just suddenly blacks out and makes a horrible noise for no reason.

That sounds like your GPU can't handle the game and crashes or something. That's usually the sign of a bottleneck, when a component is maxed out in usage

  6. If you think that, then why does the problem not happen if i underclock my GPU when playing the same game?

i can play games for hours with it underclocked, no issues. But and normal clock it does

    what could the issue be?

  7. What happens to your utilization when you're underclocked?

My guess is that your CPU takes some of the burden.

  8. When underclocked im getting
    GPU - 99%, 30%, 1881 RPM

    CPU 48 DEGREES celcius
    Around 20 to 35% utilisation

  9. Just tried it at normal clock, the utilosation was 98% ON CPU, of course it then crashed a minute later.

  10. Okay, I was wrong, but only kind of.

Underclocking will force your CPU to take too much of the burden, causing you to crash. At least, that's what it seems like from your utilizations

  11. are you sayinf that underclocking causes the crash? I said that when underclocked it *didnt* crash

when normal clocked it *did* crash

  12. Lol, sorry. It's getting late in the day and I'm not paying as much attention.

I don't know then. Sorry mate

  13. Would buying a new GPU fix the issue then? A less power hungry one too...

Basically you proved the point, your system is too 'underpowered' unless you throttle back the graphics first, then decrease the screen size (1024x768, LOW Graphics) to be able to 'play' the game without it 'crashing. That is why the manufacturers have issues MINIMUM standards to that sort of MINIMAL play, but if you want to "PLAY" it like they Advertised, the RECOMMENDED system hardware is what you have to have, PERIOD. There is no 'fix' here.
