Struggling with voltage regulation

So I have been really struggling with this for months now and I am at my wits end. My rig is in my signature. Basically my problem has been with overclocking. At first on stock settings it would be completely fine but I wanted more out of my CPU as WoW (my most played game) is a piece of crap and only uses one core. So even my rig regularly sits around 45-50 fps in raids and has trouble getting over 60fps in cities. And I also have Fallout 4 which is unlocked (which is causing extra strain on the CPU for whatever reason) and I find it hard to stay above 50fps in the downtown areas of the game.

Both of these are definite CPU bottlenecks as the GPU is hardly even used in WoW, and when my fps drops really hard in FO4, the GPU is only at 60% usage or so.

So I used Asus' automatic overclocking. This worked for about the first day (and at that point, which was months ago, I had no idea stress testing was important), anyway. All this did was shoot my core multiplier to 46 and made sure it booted. I'm fairly certain it was under voltage. Because it was stuttering horribly (both sound and video). I reset to stock and everything was fine more or less. I then looked it up and started doing my own overclocking, but I messed up and set the RAM frequency without changing the timings and left it on its own voltage (which Asus set to a whopping 1.5v) And I also was ramping up the multiplier and doing a bit of stress testing, which all passed until I hit 4.7, knocked it back down to 4.6, stress tested again, passed all. And started playing but the stuttering was still there.

Realized mistakes, found a video online that set some values that worked for her 6700K and I followed along. Set XMP to CORRECTLY OC the RAM, set multiplier to 4.6. Set cache max min to 41-8 respectively. Set CPU VID, CPU SYS AGE, and (another I can't remember) and that ran fine for a while, but I noticed that the performance under load was barely better than at stock, still stuttered even if ever so slightly, even though not under load it performed better. But this time the thing passed 12 hours of stress testing.

About two weeks later I got tired of still not having the performance I wanted even though I finally had stability with an OC for once, and tried my hand one more time at doing it myself. Set the cache values at 255, 41, 41 respectively. Left the voltage at auto, set XMP. And it WORKED! for about the first time ever it wasn't stuttering was at the correct voltage (somewhere around 1.34v) and gave me the performance I wanted.

That again only lasted about a week. At some point mf microsoft decided to install updates and when my computer booted back up mf Asus decided my CPU needed an UNGODLY 1.44V and my CPU was once again stuttering pretty bad. (video only every few seconds when the CPU is under load).

My problem is the damn thing acts pretty much exactly the same regardless of if it over voltage or under. Another problem is I have no idea which LLC level it has to be at, or if it is the system agent voltage or any other voltage causing the problems. Voltage too high the system freezes and games stutter, under voltage the system freezes and games stutter. I must be missing something here.

Oh and now, after the events of yesterday (getting the 1.44v delivered directly to my CPU) I once again restored all default values, but now WoW is still stuttering like crap under load at stock settings.

I can also disable the CPU SVID and then I can't see VCORE at all, only VID.

Should I just cut my losses and wait to upgrade to 8th gen and get an MSI board or something, or did I fry my CPU or RAM?

I'm really worried I damaged my CPU since every time I check CPU voltage it seems like it needs more. But again I can't tell because it acts exactly the same regardless of if it has too much or not enough voltage. I'm tearing my hair out here.

Not sure what to do now.

I don't even care how long it will take, I had that sucker at 4.7GHz and I might have been able to get it to 4.8GHz and it was almost stable at one point. I want the most out of it I can get.

    3840x2160 (4k) translates to 6,144,000 pixels.
    6000x1440 translates to 8,640,000 pixels.

    So with a resolution 1.4 times higher than 4k a cpu bottleneck is to be expected with WoW due to as you said piece of crap single core engine.

  4. I run them separately. Monitor 1 and Monitor 2. 3440x1440 100Hz, and 2560x1440 60Hz.

  6. Yes. I mostly use the side monitor for my monitoring software, chat programs, browser usage, etc. Nothing that should effect the games that much. (Also all of which have worked flawlessly in the past)

    I'm still trying to research this... According to Tweak town having it set to Auto is fine but the LLC has to be right to provide the stability. And I have no idea what to look for when tweaking that. Same thing with Sys Ag and VCCIO. As well as the cache voltage... I don't know if I should change that or not.

    And then there are so many other stupid features that may or may not be interfering... It's maddening.

    Lower the quality setting to 7.

    I would also take off any overclock for the cpu and gpu and disconnect the second monitor so we can get a baseline of fps to compare against the overclocks.

    Do keep the ram at its correct XMP setting.

    Drop down to 1080p, vsync/gsync off, and go to an unpopulated area, we are looking for about 200 fps.

    If you can get 200 fps than we can rule out damage to the cpu / gpu.

    1. That's not the question I asked. 2. WoW is not the only gaming having the issue. 3. I said it has run flawlessly before. 4. I'm already running it at 7, and some settings even lower. G-sync MIGHT be an issue but I have run it with G-sync for at least a month at one point without it messing up once. I can run it at 200fps in an unpopulated area at 3440x1440 100% scale. Unless I drop the settings to 1 Dropping settings does NOTHING. Overclocking the CPU has worked before it is a STABILITY issue not a performance issue. I had the CPU overclocked to 4.7GHz at one point and I never dropped below 70, but the stuttering was unbearable.


    This is not a WoW issue it is a voltage issue, across all aspects of my PC.

  9. Exactly, my instructions were to rule out any damage to the cpu and gpu as you previously mentioned might have happened.

    In any case, that was probably the wrong way to test stability to begin with.

  10. Alright well I use Prime 95, as well as LinX, and RealBench. And I did MUCH more testing than recommended by most. Using at least 2 passes of LinX, 1 hour of RealBench, and 30 minutes of Prime 95 every time I tweaked (as in every time I changed any setting in the BIOS). Yet nothing really told me anything because it passed every single time, and I would load up my games after I thought I was "done" tweaking and the stuttering was still there.
    The problem is the best OC I had passed all of them with 0 issues, even RealBench for 12 hours, like I mentioned, but still (micro) stuttered in games (any CPU heavy game) even though small, but it was much better because the voltage regulation was more spot on.

    I'm not so much worried about damage as degradation. As it seems like the voltage is significantly higher on stock settings than it was a few months ago.

    Maybe "damage" was the wrong word.

    Let me reiterate... The CPU is functioning fine, except the voltage, FPS is normal. I just want to know what I need to do to get those numbers to where everything is stable. It is not just as simple as setting the CPUVID to manual mode and giving it a value. I am trying to figure out the in-depth crap I need to do to get a stable OC. My concern is giving the CPU or RAM too much voltage to the point where they now require more voltage to reach the same frequencies they were at a month ago.

    I'm almost certain it's in the auto regulation that Skylake does to itself but I have no idea what C-settings or LLC levels do.

  11. Well, Figured it out myself mostly. Turned the power management mode from Performance mode to Balanced mode and that helped a LOT.

    I then tried some old settings and now have it to 4.7GHz at 1.34v, stuttering ever so slightly, but it passed 8 hours of RealBench last night with a max temp of 87C.

    Still want to know how to get it to stop stuttering.

  12. Just thought i'd update, figured more stuff out, but I have no idea how it really works.

    Still OC'd at 4.7GHz, all games are performing to my liking.

    The computer will stutter and freeze occasionally still, but I found that running a stress test for a few minutes "warms up" the CPU and it stops stuttering after that. As long as I do that every time I boot up, it has been running like a top.

    Weird stuff, but it works so far. WoW still kinda sucks but everything else is running normally. No idea why or anything but maybe it will help someone.

  13. I'm happy that resolved it.

    Logically moving from performance to balanced should make performance worse.

    The only possible reason I can see is you are having high temperatures which caused the cpu to throttle extremely often at the "Performance" setting but less so at the "Balanced" setting. "Going back and forth between 4.7 Gigahertz and 1 Gigahertz"

    87°C is incredibly hot and you risk damaging the cpu if you constantly run that high.

You should familiarize yourself with different architectures before attempting to help people next time, all you've managed to do is tell me what I already know, or give completely false info... TJMax for Skylake is 100C, 87C is hot but not even close to throttling or even damaging the CPU, besides, those are STRESS TEST temps, normal temps are NEVER even close to that.

    I already knew 87 °C was not hot enough to throttle it, it is still dangerous to constantly run at that temperature.

    This is assuming 87 °C is even an accurate measurement.

    ... Because your rig appears to be throttling along with your previous posts about massively over-volting the cpu which could have damaged a thermal sensor.

    Nothing I said was "completely false info"

    If you believe running at 87 °C constantly is a good idea then go for it, you still have 13 whole degrees until an involuntary thermal shutdown.

  16. Well again a couple of things. 1. Normal usage (gaming) temps are way lower, as in under 60C always. 2. It was never a problem with heat or anything else. As mentioned several times by me, it was always a voltage regulation issue. It doesn't matter what you know if it isn't even relevant. So unless it is somehow throttling WAY WAY WAY lower than it is even designed to, none of that is relevant.

    3. Came across both of those pages when I was making my initial post, didn't help because as I said the problems persisted at STOCK settings and WELL under even 60C, the fact the problem happens(ed) under even slight load, does not suggest throttling.

    So regardless what "right" information you gave me, it was completely irrelevant to my case. Like I said in my post right before your rant, 87 is not the normal temperature that was the temp that it hit after 8 freaking hours of being at 100% usage, in a medium airflow case.

    But like I said the issue was resolved by me after even more experimentation and thankfully it looked like I was just never giving it enough juice, It's well within safe limits now, both voltage and heat, thank you very much.
