Very slow download speeds

So I just bought a new MSI gaming laptop while I am deployed and the download speeds seem really slow. I have a friend that I play with that is also with me and although we only have wifi his speeds are around 30-40mbps while I am sitting at about 40-60kbps. I have turned off all background apps and messed a little with the firewall but to no avail, if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

More about slow download speeds
  1. Which laptop specifically? What kind of network are you connected to? (AC, N etc, 5GHz, 2.4GHz) are you and your friend on the exact same network? Same hardware? Same physical location?

It's a little simplistic to just measure one vs the other, but there's definitely some variable in there resulting in such a differing speed.

    Have you updated drivers?

  2. I have a GL62M TRE, and we switch between a 2.4ghz and 5ghz. An yeah same area only a bout 4-5ft from each other as gar as specs goes i know his has a better cpu but other than that I'm not positive about. I have not updated the drivers, honestly I'm new to gaming on a pc so I have no clue how to do it.

You'll have to find your specific variant, but head to MSIs page

Find your model and under "support" tab, there's drivers. Realistically, you should update them all (click to download, extract then run in the installer), but specifically focuss on the "Wireless LAN" driver listed.
