External HDD keeps disconnecting and shows up as a local disk. HELP!

Hello! I have 2 external hard drives, ADATA SH14 which is pretty old and Lacie which I bought just recently. Both of them were working perfectly but something happened. Now when I connect one of these, they are just disconnecting and connecting every second and showing up in my computer as a local disk with question mark. The interesting part is that if I connect hard drive half way in, then hard drives software starts installing and it works perfectly, after that I can plug it in fully. So I assume that's some kind of problem with a laptop. I tried doing PC reset without deleting my personal files but it didn't help. Tried formatting one of these hard drives - didn't help. Tried to plug a hard drive into different laptop - it worked. Should I try reinstalling Windows completely or it's some kind of hardware problem? Thanks for the help!

  1. Sound like your USB port is going our, could also be USB cables. Is there any other port on this lap top?

There is two USB 3.0 ports in my laptop and I am using two different cables for external drives.

  3. Most probably your USB output power is lower than expected. External HDD need more power than normal USB stick.

  4. SOLVED. Apparently both of these USB cables were bad. Bought a new one and it worked fine.
