ASUS ROG Maximus IX Hero with Wi-fi

I'm new to all this stuff so please bear with me. I'm planning to buy this https://www.amazon.com/ROG-Maximus-IX-LGA1151-Motherboard/dp/B01NBHXSP6?tag=bestmobos-20

It says that "M.2 slot ready for WiFi module"

Does it mean that I could directly detect Wifi or I need to buy something first? If I need to buy something, what it is? (any amazon links are appreciated)

  2. I have that board, it doesn't have wi-fi preinstalled. Some of the even higher maximus boards have built-in wifi and some lower strix boards.
It means that you can buy an additional piece of hardware for wifi and if you do, you can enable their ROG software to use both lan and wifi....pretty cool for extra download speed if you have 2 nearby connections or if you want to game on one connection and stream on another (for less gaming latency).
I'm not sure asus sells that module seperately though and from a quick search people haven't had much success putting other purchased m2 wifi there...The m/b backplate has the antenna holes ready for an m2 wifi module.
If you need wireless you can get a seperate pci-e wifi card :)

  3. This is actually error in description on amazon page.
This is how such M.2 wifi card looks like: https://www.amazon.com/BCM94352Z-NGFF-WiFi-Bluetooth-802-11ac/dp/B00JGFA50U
Note that it is only 30 mm long, while both M.2 slots on this board have first M.2 nut at 42 mm - meaning, you could NOT install this m.2 wifi on that motherboard. Not to mention, the back panel has empty space where it would be ports for antenna.

There is no error. The wifi card does not plug into the standard M.2 ports you are referring to. It plugs into the M.2 E key that is located in the external I/O behind the I/O shield between the bios reset switch and HDMI port. You would need to drill a hole in the I/O shield to mount the antenna jack. Correction: the holes are pre-drilled in the I/O shield. I have read that the Intel 8265 NGW will work but not the Intel 8260. You will also need an antenna kit.
