HALP!! i5 6600 @3.3ghz + GTX 1060 6GB lag spikes GTA V [MAX SETTINGS]

Title says it all, CPU usage is always at 100% and GPU is at 80-99%. This causes the game's FPS rate to drop from 60+ all the way down to 10, even though I already set the application priorities to "high". CPU is at 50-60°C degrees at full load while the GPU just goes above 60°C degrees, DRAM doesn't go over 80% usage.

my system specs:

I also run GTA V on my 850 SSD...

  1. Turn off all Advanced graphic settings and lower population density to to 1/3, you can use MSAAx2 that should task GPU a bit more.

I did that already, still no difference...how comes other people with worse setups run the game maxed out no issue?
  3. I can't link you to the video now. But I recently picked up GTA 5, watched a youtube video showing how to get the best settings for my graphics card. Was getting 20-50 fps depending on the scene, then once I changed my settings I get 60-90 fps consistently. Try youtube searching GTA 5 settings 1060. See if you get any improvements.

After applying the settings there was no visible reduction in graphics quality, just much smoother game.
  4. Do you have vsync enabled? If so disable it. What resolution are you running the game on?

I ran the game with vsync on, off and half at 1080p, still the same story.
  6. Are you running your graphical settings on lowest or highest settings?

    highest with MSAA 4x
  8. If you default your graphical settings, what are your cpu/gpu utilization?

    same story...
  10. What version graphics driver do you currently have installed?
  11. latest drivers nvidia geforce experience 378.66
  12. What kind of gtx 1060 do you have?

MSI gaming X, all the spec details are on the original post.

not to be rude but I dont think its a GPU issue, since when did older drivers ever fix anything?

Do you want my help or not? I can stop following this thread if you'd like.
  16. Sometimes new drivers are not the best and NVIDIA has proved that many times now with last few drivers.
Do you have a single or two RAM sticks??
I tested GTA V without HT on my i7 and i dont get any problems with the game even when my CPU is at 100%.

    2x4 dual-channel DDR4 @2133mhz
  18. Your CPU usage shouldn't be 100% when playing GTA V. Clearly something else is killing your CPU. I get 50-60%.

  19. Well best thing for you is to limit game to 60 FPS, you dont need more for GTA V.

You have weaker GPU and CPU is at 4.5 Ghz what makes huge difference.
  21. Are you running on the latest bios? I see many bios updates that specify cpu micro code update.

I am using DXtory to limit my FPS to 60 to reserve power, also shouldn't his CPU still be at 100%?

im not sure if my BIOS is outdated, how do I check?

By going into the bios. Post the bios version.

Just use Vsync for that no need for DXtory.
He limited FPS to 60 and have CPU overclock with weaker GPU so ofc he wont be getting 100% usage.
You can use MSI LiveUpdate to check and update BIOS.
  26. Sometimes with my old laptop i got performance drop when windows is doing its auto update. Im quite sure its about background process since bottlenecks dont drop performance.
    Maybe this is your case?
Try disconnect your internet to see if this is the case
