Motherboard Battery Vs Clr CMOS Button

Is temporarily removing the battery on the motherboards effectively doing the same thing as pushing the "clr cmos" button?

If not, can you explain what will happen differently by doing either option?

  1. Its the same. The only difference is that button does that instantly, while you need to put the battery away for few minutes or longer (there's a trick to speed it up: while battery out, push chassis power button for several seconds).

Capacitors on the motherboard can store quite a bit of power. Holding the case power button down with the battery out discharges them. I usually recommend one or two minutes to be sure the board is completely discharged. I have experienced many times while playing with overclocks that using the clear CMOS button or jumpers won't properly clear the CMOS.
