Plextor M8Pe NVME M.2 SSD in Windows 7 (Asus motherboard)

Hi, I have Windows 7 x64 and Asus Z97 PRO-GAMER motherboard (http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z97PRO_GAMER/).

I bought the new Plextor 128GB M8PeGN (http://www.goplextor.com/Product/Detail/M8PeGN#/Spec), which is a M.2 SSD drive with NVME support. I put it in the M.2 slot, enabled M2 support in UEFI and I can see disk listed in the UEFI (I updated BIOS to the newest available).

But it's not visible in Windows as a addressable disk. I can see the device listed in Windows device manager, under name "PCI Device". Essentialy what is here: http://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1015198/

On Plextor site http://www.goplextor.com/Support/FaqContent/8d57fd3aeeae4ef8a411e573ff221191 "M8Pe Series Platform Support Model List" the Z97-PRO-GAMER motherboard is not listed as supported. But Z97-PRO and other Asus Z97 motherboards is, so maybe it could also work as they should be similar?

I wrote to Plextor asking if they could update the driver to support also this motherboard, but I doubt it. Do people on TomsHardware know if there is any other method to enable the support? Ideally I would like to boot system from this drive (I will clone it from existing SSD).

I am a programmer and power user, and would like to use this fast disk. I have few days left to return it if it doesn't work for me.

Thanks, Hubert

  1. Try to do a clean install of windows, not to go through with it, just to see if the disk shows up as a place where you can install windows.
If you don't see the disk, return it. If you have updated the bios and it still doesn't work...
  2. In windows 7 to recognize a Samsung M.2 SSD i need to install several drivers, i don't remember exactly the ones, but i think that installed three or four altought only one or two where really needed.
  3. Joe-L, I'm doubtful if that would work :) Also I don't want to/can't install new Windows, I have already existing and want to clone that. Juanrdp, from what I've seen Samsung has better driver support in this case. I'm in worse situation. Thanks guys! unless Plextor replies in 24h with some very exciting information I'm going to return it.

I ment 'try' to install. Just to see if the installer finds the disk.

Dunno if you ever fixed the problem but usually with this kind of thing happening you need to initialize the disk first. if initialize doesnt come up in disk management then go to device manager open your ssd find the option to populate your drive and then go to disk management and initialize the disk.
