Upgraded video card to MSI RX 480 8GB, now PC is hard crashing and/or not waking up from sleep mode

Current build
Speccy reports

I upgraded from a Radeon 6870 to a MSI RX 480 8GB last November. It was occasionally (once a week) not waking up from sleep mode - the screen would remain black and require a hard restart. I figured this was a driver issue and put off updating.

Over the last two weeks, the problem escalated to spontaneous hard resetting of the entire PC. No warning, no blue screen, just black screen and immediate shutdown. This happens regardless of whether the PC is under load - sometimes it's in game, sometimes it's during normal operations (just running chrome) and sometimes it's while the computer is asleep over night. This is occurring multiple times a day.

I assumed this issue was a CPU heat problem, as the thermal paste and heat sink were both old. CPU temperatures were spiking about 65 degrees C. In the interest of time I took it to a shop to reapply thermal paste and upgrade the heat sink. This has corrected the temperature issue (30 - 35 C) but the problem continued. It even happened while idling in the BIOS menu.

The tech swapped out the video card for one they had on hand, (a 760) and the problem did not continue. Returning to the 480 brought the problem back. Video card temps are
under 40 C.

Since getting the computer back from the tech, I've removed and reinstalled all the video drivers but the problem continues.

TLDR: PC hard resetting and/or not waking up from sleep mode. Signs point to video card.

  4. It sounds like you ended up with one of the few faulty cards. I would return the card or swap it. Is it reproducing the same problems when plugging it into another build? Also, trying out the 750 sounds clever and simple, but power draws are not the same.
