Help needed with Phanteks P400S case

So I wanted to upgrade my pc, bought an i7-6700k, an asus z170 pro gaming mobo and a phanteks p400s case. Now I have placed everything in the case, all that is left is connecting some cables. But I'm having some trouble with it.

All that I see is a HD audio, hd led +, power sw and reset sw pin connector. Shouldn't I also have two connectors for the two fans that are in the case and the fan controller? I followed those cables but didn't find a connector. I also have this blue 19 pin connector and I'm not sure what it is used for. On the backside there is a 12V input connector that came with the case, but I'm not sure what sort od psu cable it should connect to, it sort of looks like a sata connector but it doesn't fit into any cables.

Could somebody help me and tell me which cables I'm supposed to have with this case. The manual is not very clear.

  1. On your pic, there's a SATA power connector. It connects to the SATA connector from PSU and used to power the fan controller your case has.

    Search for this connector coming from your PSU and connect it there (it goes in only one way):


    Blue 19-pin connector is for connecting case's front USB 3.0 ports. Marked the connector on your MoBo. Note, it also goes in only one way.
  2. Thanks, I was able to connect those. The only thing left is the fans itself. I found a cable with three male connectors and two of them were attached to female connectors. From what I understood, I need another female connector to plug into the cha_fan plug. I haven't seen another one though
  3. You don't need another female 4-pin connector.

    As far as i can tell, you can connect up to 3 fans into your case fan controller. Since case already has 2 fans, they are connected to the fan controller. The spare male 4-pin connector is for the 3rd case fan. You can control your two case fans directly from the fan controller that comes with a case.

    Fans connected to the case's fan controller work independently from MoBo and thus, don't need a connection to the MoBo.
  4. Thanks so I should just leave them connected to each other, but how is the fan controller connected then, shouldn't that one need a connection to the motherboard?

    When your case comes with a "fan controller", it never has any connection to your mobo. It does NOT allow your mobo to control your fans. Instead, the case's included controller does all it can. Usually it allows you to set the speed of the case fans it controls by using a switch to select a fan speed. The simpler types (yours likely) do not show you the fan speeds, and your mobo cannot tell you those, either. They also do NO automatic speed control - YOU are the only one who decides what speed to set your fans, and whether to change that as you change how much work your system is doing.
  6. Since Paperdoc already explained how the case's fan controller works, i have nothing to add.

    It's personal preference how the case fans are controlled.
    Either automatically by connecting fans directly to the MoBo and let the system decide the speed of the fans.
    Or manually by connecting fans to the fan controller and you decide the speed of the fans.

    When fans are connected to the MoBo and you use fan control software, you can create a custom fan curve for each fan.

    It powers both, the fan hub (including fans connected in there) and the LED lights the case has.

    My first build in many years, and was rather confused about the power for the fans in this case.
    On the side note, I thought that it had to be connected to the MoBo, so I would take advantage of the Fan Xpert solution on my H110M-A/M.2, and was actually worried about pulling to much power from the one header it has. So I contacted ASUS, and they couldn't / wouldn't give me the info, if it is safe to connect the 2 stock fans with a splitter. Not even what the max pull is. They only write 1 Amp for the CPU header in the manual. And yes I'm sure I'm probably overcautious.

    But as explained very well in this thread, with the manual controller on the case, there is no need for using the header.
  10. You can connect 2 fans using a Y-splitter to one single fan header on the MoBo without issues though.

    I'll take 2 case fans from my Skylake build as an example:
    My Corsair ML120 PRO red uses 0.299 A and Corsair ML140 PRO red uses 0.276 A. Both fans combined use less than 0.6 A.

    Since most fans use 0.3 A, you could even connect 3 fans to my MoBo single fan connector but the amperage would be too close to the max what MoBo's single fan header could output and in general, that is not advised.

    Thx very good to know. The stock fans from Phanteks has only has 3 pins. That wouldn't be an issue connecting them to a 4 pin splitter (4 pin header on my MoBo) and still get the Fan Xpert control of the fanspeed?

    You can install the 3-pin fan into 4-pin Y-splitter and control it via software.
    Do note that when you use Y-splitter to connect 2 fans on single MoBo fan connector, both fans will run in sync. You can't control them separately.

  14. A small note here. Since your fans are 3-pin, they can only be controlled using Voltage Control Mode, aka DC Mode. Your mobo's three CHA_FAN headers can do this - in fact, the manual on p. 2-38 says they are set this way by default. Just to be sure, check in BIOS Setup under "Chassis Fan 1/2/3 Q-Fan Control" that they are set to "DC Mode". Then CHANGE their settings for "Chassis Fan 1/2/3 Q-Fan Source" to "MotherBoard" so that these fans are controlled by the temperature sensor on the mobo, and not by the one inside the CPU chip. After making the change, remember to SAVE and EXIT to make the changes stay that way.
