TWO M.2 Samsung PRO SSD on ASUS X99 Deluxe II MOBO

Recently built my first PC and I'm stoked at the performance of the M.2 950Pro on the Asus Deluxe II X99 board. This SSD is connected via the M.2x4 bracket in the vertical configuration. The board also came with a and a Hyper M2.x4 Mini card to mount in a PCIe slot.

So does this mean I can connect a second M.2 drive via the PCi slot and if doing so will this in anyway stop me from adding a second GPU in the possibly in the future?

I'm fairly new to all this and learning as I go along and wasn't sure about the lanes and pci thing.

Anyway my aim is to setup the drives in the following way:

Drive 1: OS & Applications - M.2 Samsung 950 Pro 256GB

Drive 2: Working Project Files (4K video and Photography) M.2 Samsung 960 EVO 256GB

Drives 3/4/5: Archive of complete projects (8TB (Mirrored) WD USB 3.0 External Hard Drive)

  1. For Drive 2, why not just use a regular SATA III SSD? Those are also very fast.

But what does the user manual say about a second m.2?

  2. Hi thanks for getting back to me, I couldn't find anything regarding the second m.2 other than there is an included pci adapter. My choice for the second m.2 was purely for faster read / write speeds of large premier, da vinci resolve and photoshop files. Maybe you're right it's overkill but the price between the regular ssd (samsung 850) and the 960 evo m.2 is not a lot more.

You can run a 2nd nvme hard drive, but how it will be shared will depend on how many pcie lanes your CPU has. The 6800k has 28 vs the 6850k having 40. Your motherboard manual explains what is shared on the motherboard depending on what CPU you use. I believe the worst case scenario is if you add a 2nd GPU it may work as x8 instead of x16 pcie. Usually nvme drives are x4 pcie.

  4. I was wondering did you get the above configuration working?? I'm a Content Creator as well, Adobe After Effects, Premiere etc. and would basically like to be the same thing.

    My current Rig
    Win 10
    5960X
    ASUS X99-DELUXE/U3.1
    EVGA GTX 1080
    32Gig Ram

I would like to install Two (2) "Samsung 960 PRO Series - 512GB PCIe NVMe - M.2" one via the the built M.2 slot in the board and the other via included Hyper M.2 x4 card that came witht he board when I ordered it.

    1) I'll use the onboard M.2 slot/drive for OS, Programs and page file (Samsung 960 PRO Series - 512GB PCIe NVMe - M.2)
    2) I'll use the provided Hyper M.2 x4 card (Samsung 960 PRO Series - 512GB PCIe NVMe - M.2) for project files, exports

    3) This is not a question because I know it will work I'll purchase a new Samsung 850 PRO - 512GB to replace the old SSD a purcahsed in 2015

So just to clarify I want to use 2 "Samsung 960 PRO Series - 512GB PCIe NVMe - M.2" at the same time with my current Motherboard
