How Does USB 3.0 Port Hub Affect Transfer Rate?

Is transfer rate slower if you use a USB 3.0 Port Hub to connect your USB 3.0 external hard drive to your computer indirectly compared to when you connect your external hard drive directly to the USB 3.0 port on your computer?

It shouldn't be if it's a decent quality hub.
It obviously will be if you have more than one device in use on that hub at one time

Do you think I will experience trouble with the hard drive staying connected? I used to use a USB2.0 Port Hub for my external USB2.0 hard drive and it has trouble staying connected.
  3. Hard drive disconnects are normally down to power issues.
Older boards only output 1a per socket so 5w max.
A portable hard drive can take 3.5-5w so plugging even a mouse extra into the hub can use too much power.
Newer boards give 2.1a -10w so it's less of an issue.

Newer USB 3 portable drives tend to use much less power -2.5w or so, you should be OK.
Powered external drives are a non issue as are flash drives or portable ssd's as their power draw is miniscule.

If in doubt buy a hub that has mains power backup aswell.

no wonder my computer has been randomly shutting down during gaming time with 4 ports usually plugged in (mouse, keyboard, mic, external HDD). However I'm using a 630W PSU so that's still peculiar
  5. If all these are plugged into a single non powered hub there is probably too much power draw through a single socket.

If they're plugged into seperate usb's there shouldn't be any issue.
