CPU Temperature Maxed out at 98°C

Hello guys,

I recently bought a used Toshiba Satellite P840, it has 8GB DDR3 RAM, NVIDIA GEFORCE 630M, INTEL GRAPHICS 4000. On paper this seems like enough to support moderate Gaming. I tried playing Watch Dogs and Need for Most Wanted 2 (2012), and a couple more Games. I noticed it got too much over heated, around 95°C or so.

I opened it up, and cleaned the parts and reapplied the thermal paste. But, even after so much hassle, the problem still persists. The temperature sometimes goes over 90, else it mostly around 75-85.

Will this much damage the motherboard or other internal parts? Should I quit gaming?

I also tried using a two-fan cooling pad but it didn't quite dealt overheating problem.

P.S. normally when I'm browsing it remains around and mostly below 45°C.

What should I do?

  1. Yikes, are the fans full of dust? It will damage the parts over time at 95 but 85 isn't that bad for a laptop. I'd see if you can crank up the fan manually or dust it out a little more. What kind of thermal paste did you use and have you done that before?

Make sure air flow isn't blocked. Don't set laptop on blankets or such and play like that because it'll trap heat.

Are the fans running hard and loud?
