need help with my external hdd

Hi sir I am jebin, I need a help with my hdd. I recently downloaded windows 10 with the official windows 10 software in which it asks weather its for current computer or other comp I gave other comp... When it came to this question abut saving it as iso file or USB I gave usb and used my hdd to save the files... When it started to download and save on my hdd it did but it asked for format after 50% of completion... I gave no the files got saved but now it shows only 35gb of space and the windows 10 files where as I had 500gb of files saved in it its a 1TB HDD... If I ever formated the hdd now for removing the windows 10 files... Will I get my files back after I format or is there any other way I can get my files back??? Pls help cuz its really imp...!!!

  1. If you format your HDD, it means that you will lose/delete all your files and there is no way to get them back.
  2. But still the only thing i see is the windows OS files and 35GB of total memory... My files r not visible... But still there must b a way because I didn't allow windows to format the drive during the download process when the format option was prompted... Pls help me with this...!!!

    Hi there Jebin,

Are you talking about an external or internal drive? Is this your OS drive?

Anyway, you need to check how is the drive recognized under Disk Management. It would be helpful to provide a screenshot of it. Just upload the picture to an image hosting website and post the link.

Apart from that, I belie that you will need to use some data recovery tool: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm
Keep in mind that you need to recover your data to another, separate drive, so you don't overwrite your data.

Let me know how this goes,

I believe there should be unallocated spacre over there right?

Well, I didn't tell you to format your external drive. You are having troubles with it right? You downloaded Win 10 iso on it and now it appears as 30 Gigs?
You will need to run some data recovery tool on it, so you can recover at least some of the data. You need to save all the data on another drive or a CD or a flash drive. You do this, so you don't save the data on the same drive (external) and overwrite it. Keep in mind that the Win 10 iso could have already overwritten some of the data stored on your external, which may not be recoverable.
