Dell Inspiron 3847 cooling help, thinking about using side panel for a fan.

The Dell Inspiron's case has terrible airflow, only sporting the rear exhaust and CPU cooling fan as the only fans with the system stock, no dedicated intake fan.

This is what the case looks like with a GPU in it: https://cdn.pcpartpicker.com/static/forever/images/userbuild/141673.810d3647212e30633da71d61fd707a22.18009d3fb0fba7929b98d5269097430a.1600.jpg (My GPU is longer than that one, an ASUS Strix 960, around 8.5 inches long)

So I can't find a spot to mount a fan onto the metal behind the front panel, so I thought to get a 120mm fan and zip-tie it to the side panel's vent (right over the CPU cooler).

Would that be a good way to solve the intake issue? I know a new case is the best solution, but it's beyond my budget fight now, even budget cases. Plus I wanna save for a case, like a good mid-tower in the $70-105 range.

  1. Well zip tying it might cause some issues with the fan, but could you send a picture of the front part of the case. There might be a way to put a fan on.

I can't find a good direct picture of it and my phone is too low quality, even more than the picture I found: http://en.community.dell.com/cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/3514/3847INSIDE.JPG
  3. I'd likely get this fan: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835553001&cm_re=120mm_fan-_-35-553-001-_-Product My Seasonic PSU came with small zip-ties that I'll use if I do this.
  4. ziptieing it wont be a problem but you will have to get a pin splitter since there are only 2 connectors, for the exhaust and cpu fan
  5. I know, my PSU came with a molex cable, just need the adapter wire for the fan. Is it ok to have the side as the only intake? I can't see anywhere to put it up in the front.
  6. With Overwatch, I set it to Medium at 900p (I use a 21in 1080p moniter, so it doesn't look that different from 1080p) and my 960 gets 45-60c temp range with fans set around 70% (card uses 2 fans that max around 3300 RPM. The CPU stays up in the mid 50s range during playtime and is usually 32-42c when browsing/idle.
  7. i have the same case and i can easily put a fan in the front between the hard drive cage and the disk player

What size fan did you put and did you have to do anything to the case to fit it?

80mm fan fits perfectly, haven't tried any bigger fans tho you might be able to fit a 92mm fan if you move some of the cables

Thank you so much for letting me know. :) I'll try mounting one next week.
